Beyond the festivities, SuperFolk: The Cypher also provides an opportunity to dive deep into Hip-Hop’s culture and rich history. NW Folklife Artistic Director shares, “While we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop as a distinct genre, the roots of Hip-Hop are ancient. The Cypher, the Dozens, call-and-response, rhyme structure, colorful fashion, dance battles, and even BBQ all have roots that extend back in the culture. This event celebrates Hip-hop as a folk sta, and we’re excited to showcase that!” The event will take place at Judkins Park within Seattle's Central District, a historically Black community with a profound legacy of Black culture and history.
Join us on October 14th at Judkins Park, where music, history, and community converge to honor the legacy of Hip-Hop. Be part of the celebration, and pay tribute to an art form that transcends generations and boundaries.
