NW Folklife Presents: SuperFolk, Global Strings. Join us for an evening celebrating the rich sounds that emanate from around the world. Opening the evening are hometown heroes, Trio Guadalevin, followed by rising Canadian kora player, Sophie Lukacs.

A unique collaboration between a folklorist from Mexico City, a lute/oud/guitarist specializing in the early music of Europe and a globe-traveling percussionist and arts educator, Trío Guadalevín explores the musical dialogue between Indigenous, European and African cultures which define Latin American identity.

Sophie Lukacs, a Budapest-born, Montreal-based artist of Jewish Hungarian descent, began her musical journey with the violin and Western classical music. Inspired by her grandmother, Holocaust survivor Eva Fahidi, Sophie’s passion for music led her to study International Development and Music at McGill University. Her path took a transformative turn in Burkina Faso, where she discovered the kora, a traditional West African instrument.

Despite the kora being traditionally reserved for men of the griot caste, Sophie pursued her passion. After a fateful encounter with kora master Malang Jobarteh in New York, she immersed herself in kora studies, eventually learning from legends like Toumani Diabaté in Paris and Bamako.

Spotlight on the Waterfront, Sept 12 w/ Joint Souls and Craetorus

SPOTLIGHT SERIES: NORTHWEST FOLKLIFE

    PIER 62 | FREE
    THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 12, 6–8 PM

Join us on September 12 where we'll feature two incredible bands that beautifully and thoughtfully mesh the old with the new.  This presentation of music reminds us that traditions live within us, and by the very inherent nature of the word, tradition always finds new ideas in the next generations that take it under their wing.

    JOINT SOULS

After many years performing in choir and jazz groups, Markus Teuton brought together his own original music and his jazz musician friends to form the soulful septet Joint Souls. With influences ranging from jazz to gospel, the energetic, uplifting music of Joint Souls encourages others to take their troubles in stride and never give up hope.

    CRAETORUS

Starting as a solo musician from late 2017 to 2021, Darla Rae (front person of Craetorus) has been making moves to push for inclusivity and diversity in the WA music scene since. Their lyrics are described as contemplative, with tinges of catchiness, but enough to leave you with catharsis and a yearning for self reflection. Musically sounding in the likes of jazz, r&b, psychedelia, prog rock and indie, they’ve somehow made a conglomeration of it all to make Craetorus’ sound distinct of others.

    Open to all ages

Oct 14th: SuperFolk - The Cypher, Celebrating the Folk of Hip Hop

NW Folklife is proud to announce SuperFolk: The Cypher, an afternoon celebrating the culture, community and 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop. On October 14, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the iconic Judkins Park in Seattle, NW Folklife pays homage to Hip-Hop as an American art form deeply rooted in folk traditions. This event is made possible through funding from the City of Seattle, Parks and Recreation, and the Office of Arts & Culture.

Beyond the festivities, SuperFolk: The Cypher also provides an opportunity to delve deep into Hip-Hop culture's philosophies, practices, and rich history. Located in Judkins Park within Seattle's Central District, a historically Black community with a profound legacy of Black culture and history, this event offers a special backdrop to celebrate the intersections of Hip-Hop and Folk.

The Journey of Culture, Part One:  The Silk Road

    Friday, July 28th

    City of Bothell

    Free

In partnership with the City of Bothell, NW Folklife is presenting a Cultural Nights series, showcasing multidisciplinary folk arts practice from around the world. We would like to invite you to participate in our July 28th event, which emphasizes the expansion of culture through the transnational trade route, The Silk Road.

Incorporating the tenets of our 2023 Cultural Focus, Lagom, NW Folklife presents “The Journey of Culture”. Lagom, a Scandinavian term, specific to Swedish culture, signifies balance. Not too much, not too little, just right. To find that balance requires adjustment and acclimatization to your surroundings and the people you encounter along the way. That balance is a journey.

The global evolution and expansion of cultural ideas and expressions are, in no small part, a by-product of commerce, trade routes and people’s capacity and energies to swap, barter, and exchange goods and services. These transactions weren’t limited to commodities, but necessarily included a dialogue in music, language, art, and dance.
