Artist Statement
“My first Northwest Folklife was in 1974. Myself and another musician had billed ourselves as the “Sad and Ruined Stringband,” and we were scheduled to play on stage. However, at the last minute, we found we were too shy to perform, and we did not get up on stage! However, this bout of shyness did not last very long, as I performed at Folklife almost every year since then, in a number of different group configurations and over many years. Beginning as a young performer in my twenties, and then on up through multiple decades, NW Folklife has been a welcoming community, giving local musicians of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to share their music with supportive, appreciative audiences. Our world today is full of challenges in so many ways, yet the possibility of hope remains, and offers us this moment for creating meaning and pleasure through music, storytelling and many other forms of artistic expression. I wish Northwest Folklife long life!
With much gratitude,
Stanley"
