Back to Archive

Imam Omar Shariff performs live at Northwest Folklife Festival, 1991.

Omar Shariff (1938-2012) was a blues pianist from Texas with an impeccable boogie-woogie and ragtime dexterity. Over the years, he has performed with a number of well known musicians including Muddy Waters and Big Mama Thornton. In this performance, you hear Shariff seamlessly move between styles and tempo before launching into a stable 12 bar blues and singing about standing at the crossroads before transitioning to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. Enjoy this masterful and clever performance with all its shades and sides.
