Djimo Kouyate plays five Senegalese musical instruments (1990)
Rare footage of Djimo Kouyate (1946-2004), one of the preeminent jali (praise singers) of the second half of the 20th century. In this video, Kouyate plays and speaks about the following traditional musical instruments from his native Senegal, as well as instructing several members of the audience how to play some of them:
Djimo Kouyate, a kora player and a traditional historian/story teller from the Jali people of Senegal, performs during the 1997 Northwest Folklife Festival. The Kora, often referred to as a "classical" African instrument, is a 21 string harp-lute which has been around for hundreds of years. Songs from this instrument have been passed down for generations.
The 1997 NWFL cultural focus included a performance production entitled "African Aesthetic in Two Worlds" which explores the evolution of African and African-American string instruments, and acoustic and electric guitar styles from both continents. This event features blues musicians from the U.S. and musicians from Senegal and Madagascar as well.
