Baby Gramps deserves a category of himself, to be honest. He has performed at the festival for numerous years and reflects on his years with NWFL writing the following:
โDoes anyone remember me having a heavy metal band in '76 with Billy Hults on metal washboard, Artist the Spoonman on metal spoons, Johnny Ward (Chubby Jesus) on metal harmonicas, Walter Singleman on metal washtub, Mr. Jug (Larry Van Over) on metal jug, and me on 1920's National metal guitar?
A highlight every year was seeing all the unique characters like the one string fiddling Blue Denim Balladeer. There was a kid who played a 2 x 4 on the ground with a tire iron. Rollin' Joe was a one-man band who rode to the festival all the way from Portland on a bicycle with his little dog and his drum, guitar, etc. contraption. No one listened to him much until I said come on people get together and push the pink slip in the envelope under Freud's door (See what I've done? The Freudian slip).
Live outside the box, imagine a piece of 1890's yellowed celluloid, and there you have it - the late Rollin' Joe's One-Man Band. The man who invented the plumber's smile.
One year it hailed golf balls and it ruined my hat. I ran for shelter and the audience followed me encouraging me to continue my show. Other highlights were Sandy Bradley's musical instrument auction and when Greg Brown from Prairie Home Companion came up on stage to sing 'Catch the Wind' with me.โ
Sit back and enjoy this recording full of comedy, puns, guitar & banjo strumming, and good folk music!
