Development Associate Job Description
Northwest Folklife is looking for an organized, energetic Development Associate with donor management skills, fundraising experience and a flexible attitude to join our team. We offer generous time off, a friendly, casual work environment and room for growth. Experience with large-scale events or festivals is a plus, though not required.
This is a part-time, salaried position; hours are negotiable.
• Maintain donor database, including entering gifts, producing acknowledgement and reminder letters, managing pledges and running reports as requested
• Maintain donor relationships
• Work with Accounting department to accurately record gifts
• Hire and manage Information Booth and Entrance staff during the annual Northwest Folklife Festival
• Coordinate fundraising efforts at Festival
• Assist Development Manager with fundraising and cultivation events
• Other duties as assigned
Skills required:
• General knowledge of donor databases, experience with Giftworks a plus
• Microsoft Word and Excel, especially mail merges
• Customer service

Merchant Internship
Northwest Folklife Internship Program:
Interning at Northwest Folklife can be the experience you need to gain a career in event planning, festival production, the music industry, nonprofit management, marketing, fundraising and a whole host of other fields. Interns at Northwest Folklife take on a significant role in executing the largest free community arts festival in the nation, and learn how to increase visibility and strengthen the sustainability of a non-profit organization.
Before you apply:
- Housing and transportation are not provided. Prospective interns should carefully consider their financial needs as the internships are unpaid.
- Start and end dates, hours per week, and days of the week are all negotiable based on the intern’s availability
- All applicants must be able to commit to working Memorial Day weekend, (May 28th-31st, 2010) NO EXCEPTIONS.
- Computer resources are limited; prospective interns with laptops are encouraged to apply.
- Academic credit for internships must be arranged by the intern with their sponsoring institution. Academic credit is up to the discretion of the intern’s college or university.
The Merchant Internship:
The Merchant Intern will work directly with the Merchant Coordinator in managing the production of the 250+ vendor program at the Northwest Folklife Festival. The Merchant Intern will also directly assist the Merchant Coordinator produce the Living Green Courtyard which features non profit and green vendors; an upcoming trend in festival productions.
Identified Learning Outcomes:
- Project management
- Organization and coordination skills
- Administrative skills necessary for independent contracting
Who Should Apply?
The Merchant Intern should possess the following:
- A familiarity with Microsoft office products
- The ability to work long hours and maintain ability to make critical decisions
- The ability to multitask
- High level of organization
- A willingness to roll up one’s sleeves and get dirty

The Marketing and Social Media Internship:
The Marketing and Social Media Intern will work closely with the Marketing Manager to ensure Folklife is connected to popular social media outlets, and work on individual projects as assigned by the Marketing Manager. They can expect to:
- Complete an interactive marketing project to be decided upon by the Marketing and Social Media Intern and approved by the Marketing Manager
- Maintain Northwest Folklife’s presence on social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter
- Manage and contribute to Folklife Blog and keep track of posts from other staff members
- Monitor Google Alerts and keep up-to-date spreadsheet on press coverage
- Assist with other Festival-related marketing tasks
Identified Learning Outcomes:
- Develop and implement a small, targeted marketing campaign
- Obtain an understanding of day-to-day marketing tasks in preparation for the 2010 Northwest Folklife Festival
- Learn to write content for promotional use
Who Should Apply?
The Marketing and Social Networking Intern should possess the following:
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Proficiency in social media networking
- English as primary language
- Organized and able to work independently
- Working knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Able to stand and walk for long periods of time and able to lift 25 lbs.
- Additionally, anyone with a love of music, arts, and cultural is encouraged to apply.
