Since our beginning in 1972, the spirit of Folklife has depended on the participation of the community. Our success in maintaining our existence as one of the largest free folk festivals in the country comes from the support of everyone who takes part, as sponsors, performers, volunteers, merchants and attendees. The atmosphere at the Festival, that this is "everybody's event," contributes to the strong sense of community that the Northwest Folklife Festival encourages and promotes.

You too can participate, on any number of levels. Visit the following pages to review applications and learn more about becoming a part of Folklife.

Donors: Our most important participants are the many donors who support Folklife annually with their gifts and donations. Become a Friend of Folklife, and receive not only special privileges and recognition, but also the satisfaction and the pleasure of being a part of a very special community and helping to keep the festival a thriving event.

Performers: In selecting performers, the Northwest Folklife Festival focuses on the traditional arts and the ethnic communities of the Northwest: Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, Montana, and British Columbia. General applications are not accepted from other parts of the country except for special programs related to specific Festival themes. Being a free community festival, we do not offer performer fees.
Sponsors: Sponsors, Media Partners and In-Kind Contributors help keep the Festival a vital and free Pacific Northwest event. Folklife sponsors have the opportunity to reach a unique and loyal audience of 250,000 whose demographics mirror those of King County. Contact Lauren Waddell at (206) 684-7300, or email at lauren(at)nwfolklife.org for more information about sponsorships. 2007 Sponsors.
Volunteers:  For the past 34 years, volunteers have helped make the Northwest Folklife Festival one of the largest and most culturally diverse festivals in the country. By signing up to volunteer you can join in the fun, meet interesting people, and help keep the Festival free to 250,000 annual attendees from all walks of life. Go to the Applications page to volunteer online or download pdf files of Volunteer Job Descriptions and Volunteer Application.
Street Performers: Street Performers include singers, musicians, clowns, jugglers, mimes and much more, scattered throughout the grounds and offering you a few moments' entertainment and pleasure in exchange for your attention, your cheers and applause, and, if desired, a small donation into the hat. Please revisit this page in April for Street Performer guidelines for the 2008 Festival.
